Today I worked in the garden for a while. The weather was bright and not windy and I had an important mission. Years ago we planted a wee liriope border at the spring perennials bed. And then I planted early primroses. And then the liriope did its thing of growing and expanding and basically invading.
Last spring, the primroses had to be rescued from the encroaching liriope, so this year I determined to give the border a nice haircut–and then dig it out.
The former was easily done except for all the bending and tugging. I also cut back last season’s red-hot poker leaves. Haircuts all around! (I could use one myself.) When I straightened up to empty the first round of trimmings onto the compost pile, my legs actually shook a little. Trembly because I haven’t done any yardwork since the fall.
All in all, very good for me and good for the primroses and hyacinths. I started the process of digging out the liriope which has a well-developed root system. I, however, have a stout manure fork and will get it out of there by hook or crook. And I’ll get some exercise, which I need.
There’s now room in that bed for more primroses and that’s also my reward.
